Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning English is a hard task for many of my students. I am hoping to use these backpacks to also help the parents to learn along side their child. These backpacks will help my students to understand the importance of extending learning at home.

I work in a low performing school.

Many of our students do not have the opportunity to practice the skills taught at school in their homes. My students are very motivated in the classroom and I want to encourage them to learn at home. Our school is 91% Hispanic, 73% English Learners and 86% Economically Disadvantaged. Many of our parents work two jobs to support the family. I want to make learning fun and enjoyable for the whole family. These backpacks will allow the family to work together on activities and at no cost to them. Our parents work hard to provide their children with the necessities of life and I want to help them with the necessities to learn.

My Project

Children are our future. It has been stated many times, but as a teacher I see the struggles that my students go through. I worry about their future. I worry about their home life. I worry about their well-being. My students come to school without the tools to learn, sometimes without warm, clean clothes. I am hoping you can help me make one thing easier for them. The book bags and activities will teach my students responsibility and allow them to spend time with their families. Sometimes all a student needs is a little more time. A little more time to investigate and manipulate materials for their understanding. It is hard when a student enters my 2nd grade classroom and has not been exposed to English. I have to start from the basics and these bags will help me extend their learning at home.

It is amazing when my students finally grasp the understanding of reading and dive into it everyday.

Although this takes hard work and dedication from my students and myself. I want the parents of my students to understand how hard they work. I want the parents to see the light turn on when they have mastered a concept. Learning is an amazing thing, but teaching is even better!!!
