My 4th and 5th grade students with autism learn best from experiential learning. When they are able to see and touch what they are learning about, they not only have a lot of fun, they also comprehend the concepts we're studying with more depth. I've found that field trips are one of the best ways to support a unit of study in the classroom.

In March we will be completing a reading unit on historical fiction. While we will utilize many techniques to understand books in the classroom (partner reading, graphic organizers, and acting out scenes, just to name a few), my students would surely benefit from a history workshop at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.

During the Confino Family Living History Tour, students interact with Victoria Confino, a 14-year old Sephardic-Jewish immigrant played by a costumed interpreter. The interactive tour visits her family’s apartment, set during 1916. By visiting a restored tenement building, handling artifacts, and talking to our guide and the actor playing Victoria Confino, I am confident that my students will not only grow more enthusiastic about history but also understand the time period in a more comprehensive way. Additionally, we would like to buy the students lunch at a nearby pizza shop. Because the Lower East Side Museum is a very small institution and a National Historic Landmark, they do not offer any lunch facilities. Since we are planning the trip to coincide with our historical fiction unit in March, it will be too cold to find a park to eat lunch in.

Please consider supporting our trip to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. I look forward to seeing my students experience history in a new way at the museum, leading them to understand and appreciate better the way people used to live and the way we live now. Thank you for your consideration.
