My Students
After meeting The Pigeon during a lesson on book care, my primary students cannot get enough of Mo Willems' books. I would love to add to our collection to meet the demand.
As the librarian at a K-6 elementary school, I feel like I have 350 kids of my own: 350 inquisitive, excited, goofy, creative, lovable kids who LOVE to read.
We're a Title 1 community; nearly 70% of the students qualify for free/reduced lunch, and 10% receive ESL services. Many students cannot get to the public library, so their biweekly checkouts at the school library are their main access to books.
My Project
I literally cannot keep the Mo Willems books that we do have on the shelves; just today, Knuffle Bunny and The Duckling Gets a Cookie were grabbed off the return cart within minutes. I know that my kids will adore the adventures of Elephant (aka Gerald) and Piggie.
The language in this series is simple and repetitive, perfect for beginning readers. But the plots, drawings, and dialogue are hilarious, perfect for everyone.
I wish that I were always able to hand each student the book they're looking for.
Adding these 20 new books to the collection will help 20 more kids do a little dance on their way to the checkout line.
