Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Too often I feel that I am teaching AT my students. To foster a community of active learners I will use LEGO EV3 robotic kits to have students discover mathematic concepts through play and make meaning for themselves. “Play is the highest form of research.” – Albert Einstein

My students are hardworking and eager to learn.

They enjoy hands on projects and inquiry based problems where they make meaning for themselves. My students are incredibly creative and resourceful. The majority of students in my class identify as Latino and have a home language other than English. All students qualify for free lunch, based on Federal standards of poverty. A significant number of my students have special education services as part of their educational plan. They live in the densely populated neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City. They all plan to attend college, and often they will be the first generation in their family to have that opportunity.

My Project

My students need a LEGO robotics kit to explore mathematical concepts through play and discovery, an expansion kit for more options and creativity, and a bin for organization. These probably are not the LEGOs you grew up with! The LEGO Mindstorms is a computer "brick" that can be used to control motors and sensors. By connecting the brick, motor, and sensors with structural LEGOs anyone can build a robot. There is software to program the robot interactions included with each kit. Using these kits, my students will work in design teams to discover and apply mathematic concepts. Students will learn mathematics in practice and not in the abstract. Through hands-on discover, students will develop computer programming and engineering skills. Students will learn how to collaborate by solving problems in teams.I have two projects currently planned. In "Slowest Car" students will discover gear ratios. The second project will have students program a robot to draw geometric shapes.

My students suffer from a lack of access to equipment as compared to students in more affluent communities.

There is no dedicated computer science course at my school so I incorporate computer programming whenever possible. However, without the proper materials, this can be very difficult. With your generous support I will be able to provide students with an enriched classroom that fosters exploration and discovery in mathematics through teaching robotics and programming.
