Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing and kind-hearted individuals of all ages. We are a special day classroom at a public school. This classroom meets the needs of students with moderate to severe disabilities by modifying instruction and adapting grade level curriculum to their learning level.

My students have disabilities ranging from Autism, intellectual disabilities, and orthopedic impairments, and they work hard to conquer new challenges and activities every single day.

My Project

I teach in a moderate-severe special education classroom at an elementary school and am creating visual supports for the students within the classroom. The students have special needs, and one of the best resources and strategies to support special learners is to have lots of visual supports within the classroom. These visual supports are used to create a classroom schedule for each of the students and print other resources and lesson plans as needed.

Color-coded visuals are easier to tell apart and better help students who have challenges with written and expressive language.

Color pictures also help the students better communicate, can be used to teach new skills, and promote independence within the classroom. This printer will also be used to print out curriculum and materials in color (versus black and white) to send home with students and support their learning at home during virtual learning. It is extremely helpful for them to have printouts of the lessons to follow along with what is being presented on the computer through ZOOM since this group of special learners is one of the groups of young learners most impacted by the limitations and challenges of virtual school. Color printouts will facilitate their learning and provide them the opportunity to get the most out of virtual learning.
