My Project

Our music history course, offered to high school students in Harlem, is a unique exploration of the history and impact of music, particularly focused on the influential movements that originated in Harlem and the Bronx. In this class, students delve into the genres, artists, and cultural milestones that shaped American music, developing a deeper understanding of the communities they come from.

The addition of this turntable will create a space where students can slow down, de-stress, and connect deeply with the music.

Listening to vinyl brings a unique sensory experience; it offers students a reprieve from digital noise and helps ground their attention with the warmth of analog sound. This calm, intentional environment promotes relaxation and focus, essential for students managing the stresses of high school. Students will also be encouraged to bring in records from home to share, connecting their personal experiences to class discussions.

This turntable will allow us to create a flexible learning environment that meets various student needs, including those with sensory sensitivities or anxiety. The warmth of vinyl sound can be particularly grounding, providing emotional support and reducing stress. Additionally, inviting students to bring in personal records allows them to share their own cultural backgrounds, promoting inclusivity and a sense of belonging.

Our students bring an incredible diversity of backgrounds and experiences to this course, which celebrates Harlem and the Bronx’s rich musical heritage. This course invites students to explore their community’s legacy, helping them see themselves as contributors to the story of not just American music but music that shaped the world. This turntable will provide a rare chance for them to encounter music as listeners once did—on vinyl. In an often-chaotic world, this project will offer them moments to slow down, focus, and connect through music.
