My Project

Raising school chickens is a great way to teach students many lifelong fundamentals. Students engage in taking care of their flock and learn responsibility, nurturing, empathy, and encouragement skills. The addition of baby chicks and a chicken coop to our school garden aims to engage students in becoming part of their food system by growing organic produce for use in the school cafeteria, composting food waste on-site, and engaging in garden-to-table classes. As winter is fast approaching, this project aims to fund a winterized chicken coop and indoor newborn chick nursery until we can further fundraise for a student-designed permanent coop. Keeping the chickens year-round will allow us to further model our garden space on a sustainable ecosystem.

This project will create a hands-on learning experience for pre-K-5th graders to increase knowledge, empower healthy lifestyles, and prepare the next generation for future opportunities.
