Trade programs have been disappearing in our public schools. I have been working to revive the wood course at our school, and many students have jumped at the opportunity to sign up for Woodshop as their elective class THIS FALL. Hands-on courses allow students to develop applicable skills for the real world, and these types of courses draw in students who may feel less successful in traditional academic classes
In order to have a successful program, our students are still in need of woodworking tools and supplies.
We have been without an operating wood shop for over 8 years, so much of the equipment has been distributed to other sites or is damaged. I have been working since January to set up a functional, safe shop for our students. Fall classes are about to begin, and we are still in need of several crucial components.
Furthermore, in this wood shop, we will look beyond just basic woodwork to develop some engineering and technical skills. For example, we have a strong partnership with our feeder high school's robotics program, and we look forward to learning some engineering concepts and equipment training from them.
