Bring African Literature into an American Classroom

My students need 30 copies of this award winning African memoir, "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier" to read about young boys forced to fight, in order to survive, in the Sierra Leon Civil War.

My Students

This is a story of a young boy swept up in the violence of his country's civil war. Students will follow several young boys through the Sierra Leon jungles and learn that war is not just something they hear about on TV, but a brutal reality for many children in our world.

My students are 10th graders with average or below average reading skills.

They much prefer texting with friends and listening to music. Engaging them in reading is not easy. Therefore, I look for interesting stories that they can relate to; stories that will make them think and wonder. These students live in a small beach town. Many have never traveled outside of the state. I want to take them on a journey around the world and spark their imaginations. I want them to read literature that will make a difference in their lives so that they will go on to make a difference in other's lives.

My Project

This story is unbelievable! Most of my students are very disconnected from the realities of war. They play video games and listen to music that "glorifies" war and violence. This memoir will allow them to see the reality of war and meet some of its victims. Telling a story is not the same as reading the story. Students need to read the words to be drawn into the story and experience the plot as it unfolds as if they, too, were a live character running for their lives from the Sierra Leon rebels.

My state's education budget has been cut so drastically that our school does not have any money for teacher supplies or books.

I honestly believe this story is so very important for my students to read that I would buy the books myself if I could afford them. However, I also have to buy all of my own teacher supplies this year. Those too were cut 100%. I appreciate ANY help you can offer. Thank you in advance for making a difference in the lives of my students and in the world.
