Brightening Our Classroom With Images of Vegetables, Herbs and Fruit

Help me give my students the tools they need to express their creativity. We are working with hydroponic units and want to create colorful posters with fruits, herbs and vegetables.

My Project

One of our most significant challenges is providing real-world experiences for our students living in New York City. I aim to ensure that every student can have access to art supplies and tools to express their creativity. As part of our Science based Hydroponic Unit my students will be able to draw the cycle of growth for the herbs, vegetables and fruit we start from seedlings.

With the art supplies, our students can create posters and drawings of healthy food to enrich their learning environment.

We must also provide students with tools to transition successfully to the "real world."

Many of the students are talented artists and musicians, but do not have an opportunity to showcase their abilities. As a teacher with a special needs population, I use a student centered approach to teaching and vary content using a cross curriculum method. That is why having art supplies is so important to my classes. When you offer a teenager art supplies with a blank piece of paper, the results can be astounding. Visualizations are created through the process of watching the growth of our hydroponic plants and drawings, or even writing poetry. The classes can then do illustrations to further personalize their work. Many of our students enjoy taking photographs and we can translate these images into original art work. With art supplies we will be able to create personal memory books with the students' comments about each area and page.
