Help Mrs. Bucknam

I teach 1st grade at a low-income school in the Northwest. We are a Title 1 school, with more than 75% of students below the poverty line. My students have no books at home and limited life experience. Therefore, art education at school has become very important for them to explore their interests, talents and creativity.

As a first grade self-contained classroom teacher, I am required to teach art as part of the curriculum. Some studies show that strong art education programs have demonstrated increased student performance in other academic areas, due to art activities exercising their brains' right hemispheres and delateralizing their thinking. Many of my students can’t draw anything, not even a stick figure. I want to teach them art and read to them about the artists, but I have very limited resources. Looking through my book bins I don’t have any books on art. How I long for a tub of children’s literature that would allow me to show them a variety of art media, forms, history, and stories about the artists! So my students could enjoy school, enjoy their childhood, and enjoy art.

I am asking for a selection of level appropriate art books. Ideally I could read aloud two books a week prior to an art project. These books will be in my classroom library for children to choose during their independent reading time as well.

Start young, start early, give them a chance and let them shine. How exciting to brighten our 6-year-olds' world with art! Their happiness in return will brighten our world.
