My Students

My school is a Head Start/Pre-K Counts Program in a bilingual school that connects with the school district. Our families come from diverse cultures, languages, religions, and family make-up.

When parents meet me, their expectation for their children usually is to learn the basics: letters, numbers, shapes, and colors.

To parents’ surprise, when their children are ready to move up to kindergarten, they have also learned how to manage their emotions when dealing with a difficult situation, whether it be a dispute with a peer or what to do if a pile of blocks falls over on accident.

When my 3- to 5-year-old preschool students walk into my classroom, they are immediately greeted with hugs and smiles. Considering common distractions such as tablets, phones, and TV, my strategy is to be more engaging and interesting than the games on their electronic devices.

Because child’s play is their work, it is my job to ensure a fun and safe environment, with lots of age-appropriate, hands-on activities, games and toys. Essentially, they will achieve social-emotional, physical, language, arts, and cognitive goals.

My Project

I want to give my students another type of screen-time. This is the generation in which 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old children live for tablets, phones and TV. MANY things are wrong with young children using these types of technology, especially unsupervised and so on, but the real problem are what’s on those screens: MY COMPETITION. As a teacher/human being, I cannot move fast enough and keep their attention...UNLESS, I find what truly interests and engages them!

I know if I had a light table in our classroom, my students would and could find endless ways to play, and they will learn by having fun.

BINGO! This is better than screen time. My students will engage with colorful and bright manipulatives that will support their preschool goals while having a ton of fun!
