Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If you can think it, you can say it; if you can say it, you can write it.

Helping students with communication disorders formulate and express their ideas, opinions, and emotions is what my work as a speech-language pathologist in an elementary/middle school in New York City is all about.

Our diverse, low income school community includes many English Language Learners. We also serve students with academic and social challenges that require specialized interventions to enable them to access the curriculum. As a school-based speech-language therapist, I facilitate students’ listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. Students need to explain, describe, persuade, and retell when speaking and writing. They need the skills necessary to participate in class discussions and conversations with their peers.

My Project

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, in a position statement, states that “…instruction in spoken language can result in growth in written language and instruction in written language can result in growth in spoken language.” Consequently, spoken and written language form two ends of a bridge across which children travel as they develop their literacy competence. My students struggle with this journey; shared writing is a map to guide the trip. Shared writing is an instructional approach to teach students writing by writing with them. Shared writing activities incorporate literature to foster students’ ability to think critically about, discuss, and analyze texts. Within small group activities, I demonstrate the writing process through a “write aloud,” using student generated ideas. I facilitate the student’s spoken response, write a portion of the orally generated sentence, and guide the student while he or she completes the written sentence. Depending on the complexity of the text and task, as well as each student’s strengths and challenges, various prompts are utilized to help students write their ideas. After a shared writing piece is created and displayed in the speech-language therapy room, my students are more willing to, and confident about, writing independently.

We are in need of organizational tools to enable us to engage in shared writing activities.

Specifically, we need an easel and a rolling organizer for writing instruments and books. With your donation, my students will have the opportunity to participate in shared writing activities related to books across various genres. Through your generosity, students will discover the power of the written word. As C.S. Lewis said, “You can make anything by writing.” Thank you for your review and consideration of this project.
