Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are English Language Learners. Every day they work hard on learning to communicate fluently or learn effectively in English. Many of them come from non-English-speaking homes and backgrounds and require specialized or modified instruction in both the English language and in their academic courses.

I work in a Title I school with a very high immigrant population.

Many of my students have very limited schooling in their first language. In our school, we move from learning letters to reading very quickly. We help students learn English while giving them the chance to work at a pace that’s challenging for them without it being too overwhelming. My students come from all around the world, from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream but need the tools to make them successful.

My Project

These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom is a place where my students really enjoy reading and learning about their culture and others. Whether they are read to or read independently, they love stories that they can connect to. Every book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my student population in mind. We are currently living difficult times, and they need to read and listen to the type of stories that will give them hope and strength to face the world and make a difference.

With these books, my students will be able to gain a better understanding of both their own culture and the cultures of others.

Through this deeper knowledge, relationships can be strengthened, bridging the gap between students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

They will also be able to use these books as mentor texts when writing their own narratives. They can identify and apply the authors' goals and techniques in their own writing. The best way to increase reading and writing abilities is to read lots of engaging stories, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in literacy.
