Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are changing achievement for English Language learners every day. Our students read, write, and ponder in Spanish and English. Half of our students come from Spanish speaking households and about half from English speaking households with a few other languages sprinkled in. Each student is strengthening their language skills in their native language and in their second language which is giving them a chance, a chance to understand more from books, and more from each person they meet. Most importantly, they will have a chance to graduate from high school and have options for where to go for college.

My Project

I am requesting funds to build my classroom library. I will need bins for series of books as well as the books themselves. Since students read in both English and Spanish, I have conferred with my librarian and the students to find the most popular series that are within their reading levels that will push them to become better readers.

For English language learner students series reading facilitates their comprehension because they are familiar with the characters and the vocabulary that the author uses.

That familiarity helps increase success and understanding with each book in the series.

Students will pick a series within their reading level that interests them. They read each book in the series and when they finish they get a prize. When students read a series they deepen their connection with the books’ characters, increase their reading time and increase their comprehension. Most importantly, they don't waste time trying to decide what book to read next because it already on the list for them.

"They read tons of series each year, and they just don't stop," says Katie Decker, Walter Bracken's principal. “We found this magical thing where they were talking about characters and comparing and contrasting in the hallway.”
