Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

BRIDGES is an acronym that stands for Building Resilience and Independence while Developing Educational Scholarship. BRIDGES is a program created by me for outgoing 8th-graders, all of whom are first generation college hopefuls, many who are first generation high school attendees.

My middle school is a Title 1 middle school in an urban setting.

Most of my students will be the first in their families to attend college and many of my students will be the first in their families to graduate from high school. My students see college as their escape from poverty, but many have outside contributing factors that make the typical high school day difficult. One of the difficulties many of my students have is access to adequate time, space, and help with their homework assignments. This past summer, 20 outgoing 8th grades spent 14 of their summer days working on their high school honors language arts summer reading requirement in a summer school program called BRIDGES. We provided space, access to technology, adult support, and, the most important thing: food! It was their goal, and ours, that they would arrive to their first day of high school prepared. This would set the tone for a successful freshman year.

My Project

Many of our summer BRIDGES kids expressed the desire to continue with the support they received over the summer. Many come back to their middle school every day to report to their favorite past teacher voluntarily. Why not put these visits to good? I want to create a safe and comfortable place where my former students can get their homework finished, check their grade progress, have a snack, reconnect with a former favorite teacher and build the skills for high school that they so desperately want and need. With a room full of bean bags, they'll be able to get comfy to do their homework like most teens do. With snacks, their bellies will be full so they'll be ready to work, with reward incentives, like gift cards, they'll build the intrinsic motivation for maintaining their attendance and GPA while earning small extrinsic rewards. They sit in uncomfortable desks all day. My goal is to make the space look inviting and feel comfortable.

Completing high school will literally save these students' lives.

High school dropouts live, on average, 10-12 years less than high school graduates. These students know that college is their way to get out of poverty. My goal is to help them build the resilience skills necessary today to navigate the competitive high school structure. Their goal is: GRADUATION!
