About My Students

Lilly and Sarah are officers of my Student Y club. These students are service-oriented and very active in our school. They often use their voices to enact positive change in their community. This endeavor will allow the students to raise money for attending conferences and rallies.

Our students want to raise enough money to offer scholarships to students who cannot pay the full amount to attend club conferences and public rallies. Also, the club members would like to attend one of the state Education committee meetings, so they can see how decisions that directly affect their school life are made. The students believe strongly in the importance of their voice in decision-making in our school and community. They are determined to make these experiences happen for our group. During one of the club meetings, students brainstormed ways to fundraise. They talked about how many of our high school students arrive to school with a coffee in hand and thought there had to be a way to capitalize on that market. In short order, they created a proposal to present to our principal. The students also wanted to allow other clubs to take turns selling coffee and hot chocolate to earn money.

By creating the Bills for Brewing project, students have already demonstrated one important skill: being solutions-oriented. The students saw a need and, rather than sitting around waiting for an adult to solve the problem, began to brainstorm ways to fix it. This project will give students experience with setting goals, collaborating with peers, marketing and selling a product, and managing money. Students will be able to contribute to the club's financial stability through this endeavor which will help students have opportunities to attend conferences. Eventually, students will be able to fulfill their first goal of offering scholarships to students who can't afford to pay the full conference and trip fees. Meeting this goal will give students both confidence and some independence from us, as sponsors, who often make club financial decisions. Likewise, students will be able to build a community with other small clubs who join our group to fundraise.

In Their Own Words

Our project idea is to sell coffee and hot chocolate in the mornings to fundraise for KYA (Kentucky Youth Assembly) and KUNA (Kentucky United Nations Assembly). KYA and KUNA are conferences that allow students to voice their opinions and learn about our government.

Our club and our sponsors, Mrs. McPherson and Mr. Burba, will work with us to organize the supplies, sell the product, and apply the funds to our trip costs. Being able to sell a product that appeals to our peers and allows us to be a self-sufficient club will help us become leaders in our school community. Not only do we plan to use this as a fundraiser, but we also hope to invite other small clubs who need help fundraising to take an opportunity to use this as a fundraiser.

This project is important because we believe students should take an active part in school and community decision making. Attending KYA and KUNA conferences helps us take an active part in government. As future leaders of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, knowing exactly how our government works ultimately benefits us and our state. The project will help us earn money to attend conferences, but also will also help us partner with other small clubs who need to fundraise, too.
