My Project

Our complex learning needs students at our school are amazing! School for them is a hub for learning, social connections, and independence. They work very hard and make every effort to perform well in school. Their teachers and support staff make a concerted effort to provide real world learning experiences for all the students. Transition (life beyond high school) is a very important educational component for students with complex learning needs in both Middle and High School.

As an educator of students with complex learning needs I am passionate about finding create ways to provide communication, social, functional, and job skills into the daily instruction.

The materials requested will be used to create a coffee bar in our school community. The coffee bar will be used to create opportunities for our students to gleam job skills; such as customer service, proper sanitation, working a shift, preparing product, setting up and taking down materials, taking inventory, managing receipts and money. Students will practice following directions and listening skills. They will need to follow directions when they are brewing the coffee. They will need to listen when a patron requests light ice, sugar, flavoring and cream. Students will also learn how to break down and clean equipment. They will learn the proper methods for cleaning and using the ice machine.

As mentioned above if funded this project will offer valuable job and functional skills. Students will be able to add actual job skills to their resume. They will become comfortable working with the public. This project is a sustainable project that will impact not just our present students but our future students as well. All monies raised from the project will be used to sustain the coffee and bar and defray the cost of enrichment activities for the students.
