My Students
PS 120 is a vibrant and diverse population of over 900 elementary school students. A majority of our students come from low income, immigrant families who work hard to provide the very best for their families. A majority of our students' families come from Asian countries including China and Korea, as well as India and Pakistan.
One of the challenges many of our students face is that many are “satellite babies,” meaning these children typically live away from their parents in another country (typically China) for months and/or years so that they parents can focus on building a stable home for them here in the US.
Eventually, these children are brought to the US to live with their parents. The emotional impact and needs of both parents and children in these cases is enormous.
Despite the challenges many of our students face, a majority of them are resilient and engaged in our school community. Many participate in activities like the gardening club, chess club, student council, basketball and cheerleading team, green team, tech squad, Dragon Fire Radio, Dragon Press, student ambassadors, lunch leaders, and upper grade/lower grade monitors.
My Project
Despite the uncertainty of whether or not school will open in the Fall under a blended model or all remote learning, in person schooling, it is clear that many students and staff will experience concerns related to the social-emotional well-being.
Having a Hepa air filter will help to lesser the anxiety of all students and staff, including myself, when they enter my office space.
It will help to better address the social-emotional needs of all that I work with by helping to alleviate the emotional stress of being in a smaller office space with me (especially when I am working with a small group of student) so we can focus on larger concerns.
