My Students
As a teacher in a Title I school in the NYC Department of Education, my students are faced with many challenges both in and outside of school. All students in my school receive free breakfast and lunch and many live in temporary housing.
The majority of our students struggle academically with little support outside of school.
School quickly becomes their second home.
Although I may not be able to control what goes on outside of school, I try my best to give them the greatest experiences during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
With the introduction of Covid-19, schools are now faced with looking at ventilation systems to gauge whether schools are safe for students. Working in a school built in the 1920's, our ventilation system consists of opening the few windows we have and our classroom door and hoping for some kind of cross breeze.
An air purifier will give my students some fresh, clean air while filtering out some of the Covid-19 virus.
Cleaner air will not only give parents an added piece of mind about their 4 year old coming to school, but will also alleviate some anxiety that the kids might have.
In addition to cleaner air, students are in great need of individual art supplies. Students will be unable to share supplies this school year and much of the supplies we are asking students to have will be kept at home for their remote learning activities. The glue, crayons and scissors will allow the children to complete their own projects and work without worrying about sanitizing supplies constantly.
