Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Scholastic News has proven time and time again to be an exciting avenue for students to become interested in informational/expository text. The murmuring of excitement when it is time for my class to receive the most recent newspaper never subsides. Fourth grade students find it challenging to read informational content and hone in on the evidence that will answer a question. Scholastic News provides a perfect example of accessible articles for students to get this type of practice. In having students examine and refer back to the text to answer questions, students become successful comprehensive readers who can find evidence to support their answers. In my classroom, many in-depth and great discussions have taken place based on the interesting and relevant articles. This enhances student learning and motivates students to read a variety of types of texts aside from their usual preference. This will promote lifelong readers that can comprehend content and answer comprehensive questions. From that comes writing opportunities in the opinion, informational, and narrative genres. The exposure and practice of the cross-curricular topics in math, writing, social studies, and science with an emphasis in reading all in one thought-provoking location is invaluable to the students. College and career readiness begins in elementary school. All of the skills gained with this resource pave the path for these fourth graders. Please help these students grow as scholars by providing them with a year of Scholastic News.
