My Students

I teach in Self- Contained Special Education Classroom, in a Title One school in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. Many of my students are struggling learners who require intense supports to access grade-level content. Creativity is key when planning lessons and engaging students who have been discouraged throughout the years because of the difficulties they face accessing the curriculum. However, many students lack access to technology inside and outside of the classroom.

My mission is to completely halt the school to prison pipeline.

As a special educator, I am fully aware that the population I teach has been slated to fill this nations prisons as predominantly black and Latino males with learning disabilities. For the short time that I have them, it is my mission to equip each student I teach with the tools necessary to succeed in this society. Each student is taught two basic principles when they enter our classroom: 1. Never make excuses.

This technology will help me tailor instruction to specific students, and provide me with necessary data on student levels and help track student improvement throughout the year to ensure students are making progress towards their goals. Help me give each student a fighting chance!

My Project

We are living in a technology age! Our students have absolutely no access to technology in our classroom. It is my goal to integrate technology into instruction for students who struggle with academic tasks. I plan to use Ipads which will allow me to use reading software to help improve the reading levels for struggling readers. In addition, I plan to use text-to-speech technology to relieve the burden of decoding for struggling readers, allowing them to focus on comprehension.

These are the necessary supports needed in my self-contained classroom due to the varying levels of students present in my classroom.
