My Project

100 percent of my students in South Central Los Angeles are students of color. 100 percent of them come from households living below the federal poverty line. The neighborhood surrounding our school is riddled with violence. Last year, we had a rash of incidents where students were being targeted, thrown to the ground, and robbed of their jewelry, sneakers and electronics on the way to and from school.

Tensions are high.

Students have their guard up. And understandably so. But students who don't feel safe, can't learn.

Behind their tough teenage exteriors, they're still kids at heart! Dedicating 30 minutes per week to playing games, building Legos and participating in craft projects TOGETHER, brings down those walls and builds up our class culture.

We feel safe to play together first. And then we feel safe to discuss together, to work together, and to learn together.

I have watched an investment of 30 minutes of play per week turn my classroom into a place where students feel safe to collaborate, to share their ideas, to speak out and to teach one another.
