Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic kids eager to learn. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless, living in garages or multiple families in one residence. My kids' parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!

My students worry about coming to school and staying safe; and yet, they still want to come to school to explore, learn and grow.

I am teaching online and trying to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science and social studies.

My Project

When kids are hungry, it is difficult to concentrate. Many of my families are having a difficult time getting food on the table. And although we have a free breakfast and lunch program for our school-age children, many of my families have to stretch their budget to feed their families, including their toddlers and older teens. These free meals for our school kids help. But, our families must come by school at certain times on certain days to pick up those meals. Many families are working and are unable to come to school on these schedules. We try to make arrangements, but it is always a challenge.

Giving my children a bag of groceries with breakfast, lunch and dinner items will help to fill their bellies and open their minds.

They will be able to concentrate on our lessons, because they are not hungry. Parents will be able to feed their children while supporting their families.

I am hoping to provide my families with 3 meals a day: oatmeal and cereal for breakfast, peanut butter and jelly and soup for lunch, and pasta with sauce and Hormel meals for dinner. Every meal helps and your support is truly appreciated.
