This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic kids eager to learn. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless, living in garages or multiple families in one residence. My kids' parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!

My students are excited to come to school to explore, learn and grow.

I am working to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, especially during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science, and social studies.

My Project

Our students attend school for 7 hours a day. They must wear masks daily. Our district is providing them, if students do not have their own. This is a costly, daily expense. The masks are mostly disposable. When they fall on the floor, they cannot be put back on, as they are dirty and exposed to germs. Students need new masks. This is happening 2-3 times a day for some children, after recesses and lunch, especially. It has proven to be very expensive for our district to continually replace masks. But, we are doing it to keep our children and staff safe all day.

I am requesting breakaway lanyards for all of our TK and Kindergarten kids to help keep our mask off the floor and around our necks when not in use (when eating).

By providing our students with these breakaway lanyards, students will clip the lanyard to the mask and feel safe knowing that the mask will not fall on the floor. And with the breakaway clasp, lanyards will "breakaway" from the children if caught on anything to prevent any choking hazard. Students will keep the lanyard at school in their personal boxes for daily use. If the lanyards fall on the floor or if they are exposed to any dirt or germs, they can be washed in soap and water and be reused. Each class/grade level will be given a different color lanyard to help us monitor our students and return found lanyards to the classroom (to be washed and reused). The extra lanyards will be made available for new students as they enroll. The name badges will also be used to help our specialists with names and our children to keep their lanyards with them.
