My Students

At our school, we understand that no two students fit the same mold. Our goal is to create a safe, comfortable, and inclusive environment for all our students to learn. The materials requested will be provided to all classrooms from Pre-k to 5th grade.

My Project

As an occupational therapist, It is my dream to create break areas in every classroom at our school to help the students have a safe space to feel calm. A break area is a space in the classroom where a student can take a moment to decompress and refocus when they are feeling upset, frustrated, overwhelmed or highly energetic. The goal would then be for students to rejoin their classmates feeling calmer and more focused. In order to help teachers create this space in their classroom, I am asking for bean bag chairs for students to relax on. Additionally, visual drip timer and stress balls will offer students a couple of sensory strategies to help them decompress. I hope to put these sensory tools, and some handmade ones, into a book bin that will be kept in the break area to make sure everything is stored in one place. Lastly, a kitchen timer will help provide a time limit to the breaks in most cases (4-5 minutes and then rejoin the lesson).

We need to provide strategies to help our students cope, even more so during this pandemic, so they can enjoy learning and being back at school.

This project would allow every teacher in the school, PreK-5th grade, to have what they need to create this calming space in their classroom.
