Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are truly exceptional, bilingual learners. Since kindergarten, they have been a part of our Dual Language program that teaches them half the day in English, the other half in Spanish, with the goal of having fully bilingual students graduate in 8th grade. This year is my first year teaching in Spanish. The biggest challenge for me has not been student reluctance to learning Spanish, but rather the lack of resources available to help promote their reading growth.

My fourth graders are voracious readers attending the only International Baccalaureate (IB), Title I school in North Philadelphia.

All of my students receive free lunch and most come from immigrant families where English is not the common tongue. Supporting my students in their Spanish growth is hard, however, as my Spanish library consists of 89 books that the school supplied me. I have 52 students, so they will and have very quickly gone through my books and search for more, which I do not currently have to offer them. This is where I'm hoping you can help! Please help fund my Spanish Library and grow the minds and lives of my amazing learners!

My Project

Last year I was so fortunate to have my DonorsChoose project fully funded. It helped me start my Spanish Library, which was almost nonexistent at that point. As a first year Spanish teacher in 4th grade I requested lots of books that I thought would be grade appropriate, but I learned that my struggling readers still did not have enough books that were accessible to them. As a result, I'm hoping to obtain more picture books for my class since the majority of my students are not yet at the reading level needed to read some of the Spanish Chapter books I currently have.

Supporting my students by providing them access to a greater variety of Spanish language picture books at their level will help grow them as Spanish readers.

Providing low-income students access to an expansive Spanish library will not only support their growth, but might even inspire some hesitant readers to pick up a book. These books will offer my students a choice in literature that many of them have never had before in Spanish class. For this reason, my library needs to be stocked with books that would capture and challenge the cornucopia of learners I teach.
