My Students

I work at a Leader in Me school where we teach children to use the 7 Habits of Happy Kids.

We believe that all students can be leaders. However, the challenge is getting kids to believe that they can grow their minds and make themselves smarter. Often, they believe that the circumstances they are currently in are the only options available as they become adults (low income jobs, poverty conditions, not able to obtain further education after graduation). They need to understand that they can be in charge of their learning, make better choices, and persevere through challenging times/tasks.

My Project

The books I am requesting will teach students how the brain works and show them that they can make neural connections that make them smarter at something. They will also teach students that mistakes are learning opportunities and help them see that their intelligence is not a fixed thing. The toys will provide a visual sense of the brain and neurons. The games will provide opportunities for students to develop reasoning skills that are necessary for critical thinking. Persevering through the challenging games will also help students make neural connections.

This project will help me to teach my students about the brain and the growth mindset.

Using the Growth Mindset research done by Dr. Carol Dweck and Mary Kay Ricci, my students will have the opportunity to learn about neuroplasticity, perseverance, and being in charge of academic success. My goal is to help students believe that dedication and hard work can improve their school experience.
