Brain Fuel: Healthy Snacks for SPED & Gifted Students

My Project

I am incredibly fortunate to work with a group of students who are full of potential, curiosity, and resilience. My students include a blend of gifted learners and students with special education needs, and they bring their own special perspectives to our classroom. What makes them truly remarkable is their capacity for growth, even when faced with challenges. Whether it’s a student who struggles with focus or a gifted learner who quickly grasps new concepts, they each bring something invaluable to our learning community.

My goal for this project is to provide healthy snacks that will support Sped and Gifted students both physically and academically.

Healthy nutrition is crucial to their overall well-being and ability to concentrate. Too often, hunger or lack of access to nutritious food can be a barrier to effective learning. By providing these snacks, I aim to ensure that all my students have the energy and focus they need to thrive in the classroom.

The coffee cart initiative for students under the Life Skills curriculum is designed to enhance essential skills such as responsibility, communication, customer service, and money management. By operating the coffee cart, students gain hands-on experience in various aspects of work and business, including inventory management, budgeting, and teamwork. These practical skills help build confidence and prepare students for real-world scenarios, contributing to their personal and vocational development. Moreover, the coffee cart offers opportunities for students to practice social interaction in a structured, supportive environment, fostering independence and self-reliance.

For students with special education needs, having access to nourishing foods will help maintain a consistent energy level, supporting their attention span and participation. For our gifted students, the snacks will help sustain their focus during challenging tasks and keep them engaged in their accelerated learning.
