Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students attend a middle school in Las Vegas, NV. The school serves approximately 1,000 students across grades 6, 7, and 8. The school is fairly racially homogenous with the following demographics: 87% Hispanic, 9% black, 1% white, 1% Pacific Island, 1% American Indian/Alaskan Native, and 1% identified as multiracial. Approximately 46% of students are identified as English language learners. All of the students are economically disadvantaged families and the state classifies all of the students as low-income.
On average, my eighth-grade students struggle with math.
We are one of the lowest-performing middle schools in Las Vegas. Most of my students are at a third to fourth-grade level in math. I am determined to help these students become grade-level-ready in math and prepare them for high school.
My Project
One area of focus I have for my classes this year is helping students move information from their working memory into their long-term memory. One way I want to do this is through brain breaks. Studies have shown that it is important for students to take a break after learning material so their brains get time to link the information into their long-term memory.
In my math class, I want to give my students the brain breaks they deserve.
If a student needs to use a Pop-It or watch different colors flow for a minute and then get back into learning material, I want them to have the opportunity.
Not only will these materials help with brain breaks, but also with big emotions. In middle school, students can have big emotions and need a moment to themselves to collect their thoughts. These brain break tools can also help students regulate their feelings.
