This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 20 pre-Kindergarten students in an inner-city Baltimore elementary school. For many of my students, pre-Kindergarten is their first exposure to formal education and they are so excited to learn and engage with their peers and teachers each day.
My 4-year old students are curious and full of creative energy that is expressed in various ways throughout the day to include playing, drawing, singing, dancing, and communicating with their peers during whole and small group instruction.
Any donations would be greatly appreciated and used to instruct and develop the whole child in an age-appropriate way.
My Project
The average concentration span for a preschooler is usually less than 15 minutes. That is, 15 minutes purely focused on one task. For younger preschoolers, it is 5 minutes. My Pre-Kindergarten students attend school virtually 5 days a week and the resources that they have access to are very limited. My young students are doing the best they can to stay focused during our synchronous learning time, but require lots of brain breaks to refocus their attention back on the task at hand.
I want to provide my students with movement and music materials like rhythm sticks, bean bags, musical scarves, and shaker eggs to use during our routine brain breaks.
These materials will not only provide my students with much needed breaks, but will also develop fine motor and hand-eye coordination, language development and listening skills. My students will work with rhythm, beat, and tempo while using creative thinking and problem solving. The activities that I have planned with also help students with directionality (up, down, forwards, backwards, etc.)
