My Project

Teens' mental health and development is an increasing focus point in high schools, and my classroom is no different!

Teaching a world language (where students already concerned about making mistakes and "failing" can get increased anxiety when now they have to experience all that in Spanish) has led me to seek out a variety of sensory and brain-engaging materials to keep in my classroom to help alleviate stress and focus thought.

My Spanish students have a wide range of backgrounds and abilities, and any way to constructively relieve the stress and help focus the mind on language learning is a plus. Often, a simple 'brain" break for a few minutes can even make a huge difference!

When students are stressed, "stimming," or otherwise ramping up anxiety, having some simple tools on hand to help relax and refocus has been crucial to my students' success. No matter the age, they become engrossed in puzzles, mindful coloring, squishy objects, etc. Having constant access to these materials has made a noticeable difference in many of my students' motivation and production. They even comment on how much these types of items help them, and it's hard to get a teen to admit to anything being cool or helpful sometimes!
