Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my classroom, students think and act like scientists. Over the course of the year my students move from relying on me as their source of information to learning from each other and through investigations and other classroom experiences.

I have been teaching science in the South Bronx for the past four years.

I want to inspire my students to not only love science but to love learning. I am always trying to learn new practices and strategies to better serve the diverse population of students that I teach. Each year there are new obstacles to overcome and new ways for me to reach struggling students. I frequently attend professional development workshops in an effort to find new opportunities to engage my students in learning science. This year I am also working with several teachers in a coaching capacity. I love finding new ways to teach different topics and really try to incorporate new learning opportunities into my classroom each year!

My Project

I am requesting materials to develop a better understanding of the current research on the brain and education. I am also requesting materials to help me better serve my special education students. The resources I am requesting will help me understand how reading, writing, memory, mathematics, and other topics are processed in the brain and then I will be able implement strategies based on the research to help struggling students find success in my classroom. With an understanding of how the brain processes memory. For example, I will be able to tailor my lessons to meet the needs of students with memory impairments. After reading the books that I have requested I will know more about how the brain works and how to teach lessons that are more aligned to current brain research. I will also have a better understanding of how to differentiate and teach lessons for special education students.

I know that the resources I have requested will change the way that I think about planning lessons and activities for my students.

Many students do not like science because it is hard or unfamiliar to them. But with the resources I am requesting I will have a new methods and practices to use that will allow me to engage students who may have previously found science to be difficult. I believe that these resources will help me inspire students to love science and learning!
