Help Mrs. Arthurton

I teach a 2nd grade class of students that live in a low income community that is also crime ridden, and violent. I teach all academic areas including. math,writing,language arts, social studies, and science.

My students have a lot of energy, especially my boys. It's been very challenging to not only get their attention, but also to keep it and get them engaged. I recently read a book about getting boys especially interested in writing. It bought out a good point about the way teachers set up the class, books we bring in, and how we look at boy's writing. After reading it I bought in books I thought they would all enjoy like, "Captain Underpants"and "The Day My Butt Went Psycho." The kids loved it. It inspired them to look at writing differently. They were ready to go.I had lit the fire under them, but the lack of supplies was about to extinguish that fire.

From past experience I know that children will keep going if we allow them, if it's something they enjoy. Now they began wanting to do comic strip style books, and draw pictures to go with their stories.The supply of paper, pencils, markers, staples, and rulers will allow them to write as much as they want to without restrictions. They love doing covers for their stories and stapling them their selves. Having colored paper available for covers lets them know how important their writing is, and doing things on their own gives them the independence and freedom they need as writers.

Your support and desire to assist these children will provide them with an opportunity to expand and develop their writing and creativity. It will also instill in them the courage they need to try new things, and to have fun with it. Having a love for writing will also provide them with another alternative to put their feelings and thoughts down somewhere in a positive way. This tool will certainly be something that will go with them throughout their lives, and it will make a difference.
