Bouncing Our Way Through Learning

My Students

My elementary students are from a low-income school district. These children are growing up where they are facing challenges that determine who they are going to be. The students and their families are making choices that impact their lives every day, including about what school the kids should attend.

Every morning my students recite the school creed that goes "I choose to be here, I'm here to learn and achieve!"

The students who come to our school have made the choice that education is important to them. They may not have access to the same materials or real world experiences that students in other districts have but every day they come to school and every day they are doing their best.

My Project

One of the major lessons we learn in fourth grade is about making a good choice for ourselves. Providing alternative seating options is one way I help them to learn about making a good choice for themselves. My students currently choose between sitting at the table, sitting on an exercise ball, sitting on some wiggle seats, or using the floor pillows to sit on the rug. My students each know that there are some options that they want to use, but they don't work for them personally and it is awesome to see them look at the ball and remember that they get too distracted and choose a different seat so that they can do their best work.

When the students are working in a comfortable environment, they are more focused and engaged on their assignments.

The bouncy bands and ball chairs in this project will give my students who like to fidget ways for them to move while being less distracting to their classmates. The ball chairs will keep the students in place so if they get lost while bouncing quietly, they don't have to worry about falling off or feeling like the ball is moving on them. The bouncy bands for desks will help my students who like to move their legs while they are working. They won't have to worry about swinging their legs and kicking someone or having their tapping on the floor distract their neighbors.

My students love being able to make choices about their seating and I have seen improvement in my students focus when given these options. Our class would love the opportunity to have more choices for them to find what works best for them.
