My Students

Our school is located within the heart of the largest urban school district in New Jersey.

Our classroom consists of 21 energetic first-grade scholars (and growing). Our scholars range in ages 6 to 8 years old. Each scholar brings a unique personality to our classroom family.

My Project

Due to the large size of the class, you can imagine how difficult it is to keep their attention and focus on the material. It was by searching for techniques to maintain the attention of our scholars that I came across a product called Bouncy Bands. The bands are simple in design but the results will amaze you just as it has amazed many educators including myself. The bands are placed on the scholars' desk and help them keep their focus and attention. Instead of talking or even creating distracting situations, the scholar will bounce their feet and this way they exert their energy without getting up from their seats. Accordingly, without the distractions the scholar can stay focused on the teacher and maintain their eye contact with their teacher, thus absorbing the material.

The donations towards the Bouncy Bands for my classroom will improve the academic setting.

The learning that goes on is a great component but the distractions of wanting to get up and move around, certainly disrupt the learning targets. Having the bands in the class will allow students to learn based off the 3 key components of learning; auditory, visual and KINESTHETIC! I hope to keep their brains moving forward by allowing my students to wiggle their legs!
