This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a blank slate. In TK, I get many students that have never been to school before. It's my job to show them that school is awesome, learning is fun, and sitting at your desk all day is not what we do! We cover a lot of academics, along with social and emotional learning each day.

My school believes in "Kindergarten to College," which is a huge motivator for our families, most of whom live near the poverty line.

It is my privilege to begin their journey to success with hands-on learning and interactive lessons.

My Project

Teaching TK comes with its own set of challenges. One of my main goals for the year is to get my students ready for kindergarten. Sometimes, that means teaching letters, sounds, and counting, but for the most part, I am teaching citizenship and behaviors. So many of my students have never been in school before and it is my job to show them how to be a student.

The most challenging behavior I tackle is staying focused while sitting.

I work a lot of songs, movement, and actions into my lessons, but I find that when some students are sitting at their table, they still have loads of energy that need somewhere to go. Balance ball seats will help my students be able to practice focusing on the task at hand while working at their table.
