My Students

I teach 5th grade reading in one of the best schools in Oklahoma! My students are a diverse group with varied levels. Our classroom is a space where students enjoy coming to learn, but in a non-traditional way. We are a Title I school with the majority of our students receiving free lunches. These kids have the biggest hearts you'll ever come across. Every single one of my students has integrity, compassion, and a positive attitude. They are truly amazing people. My school is wonderfully supportive of the project-based learning that we do in our classroom. I couldn't ask for a better environment for these students! We are truly a community!

My Project

My students are in school from 7:15-3:05 every day. Staying focused that long can be a challenge for anyone, but especially for preteens! My students often want to get up and walk around the room for no reason or ask if they can move from their table and sit on the floor as they work. They are uncomfortable sitting in a hard chair all day long. When I approached my class about the amazing kid-inspired Target project, they immediately wanted to look for things that would make their classroom experience even better!

My students scoured the internet looking at pictures of active classrooms, searching for the perfect element to add to our own classroom!

There was much debate, so they developed teams to choose different products. Then, their teams wrote persuasive speeches and presented them in a classroom debate forum. It was not only amazing to see their passion, but also to hear comments from my students that emphasized the need to find ways to help them focus in school. My students decided to vote and narrow down their choices to the top two. They were wildly excited about the ball chairs! A strong argument for these was that these chairs could be used all day long every day. This far exceeds the 60 minutes of exercise that they had originally been aiming for. My students also pointed out that they can be used to strengthen back muscles and to keep their bodies from getting so stiff during the day. They were so excited to share their ideas, and to go so far as to plan a chart for rotating the chairs to different sets of desks so that all students would have an opportunity to use them! They also chose a few dorm chairs as alternative seating!
