This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My fourth and fifth grade students are always excited about coming to the library. They want to engage in the "out of the ordinary" activities and read the unique books that require thinking on a higher level. As a librarian teacher of rich literature, it is a challenge to stay one step ahead of their thirst for knowledge.
My students love to be challenged and will definitely change the world with the knowledge gained through the books they are reading now.
My Project
The Crossover by Kwame Alexander is a book that introduces upper elementary students to free verse poetry using the sounds and motions of a basketball manipulated by African American twin boys. The author of the Crossover describes the message of the novel with this direct quote:
“Never let anyone lower your goals.
Others’ expectations of you are determined by their limitations of life. The sky is your limit, sons. Always shoot for the sun and you will shine.”
― Kwame Alexander, The Crossover
My fourth and fifth graders will use this novel as a book study through Google Classroom where they will participate in discussions, videos, and personal interactions with other classmates. I am so excited to introduce this book to my students to see their reaction to poetry through the manipulation of a basketball.
