My Project

Imagine a living ecosystem in your own bedroom! Bottle Biospheres will give each student a chance to bring science into their home where they can observe plant and animal life every day. Science should involve exploring, touching, seeing, smelling, in addition to reading about concepts in a book. An ecosystem in a bottle gives students just that chance. The bottle biosphere will contain both a terrestrial and aquatic environment. The bottom of the bottle will house a goldfish, two pond snails, and aquatic plants, elodea and duckweed. The top portion of the bottle will be used to plant and grow the following plants/vegetables: barley, sugar snap peas, and radishes. Students will record daily observations about the self-sustaining bottle biosphere in their science journal.

The bottle biospheres create opportunities for students to create a learning environment inside of their own home.

Students learn by doing, and what better way than to create a self-sustaining ecosystem they can observe every day. Bringing the classroom into their homes can enhance scientific discussions among family members and further promote the concept that learning can take place anytime and anywhere.
