Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are very diverse and attend a NYC Public School located in the Bronx, NY. Many come from immigrant single-parent households and are faced with a host of challenges. I am proud to watch them grow and learn despite the many obstacles they face outside of the classroom.

Most of the students come from impoverished homes and lack many necessary resources that most families take for granted.

Unfortunately, research proves that there is a link between poor academic performance and poverty. Our school becomes their safe haven where they feel valued and respected.

My Project

5th graders are budding young readers that love to learn about what is going on around them. They are becoming socially conscious about the most pressing issues that impact our world. This is a formative year, where they are preparing to leave their elementary school for middle school. Teaching in an urban area where many of my students live in poverty, they don't have access to non-fiction kid-friendly resources.

5th grade is a perfect time to expose students to newsworthy and timely topics like climate change, social justice, and global health issues.

Through our non-fiction units of study, these storybook magazines will enable students to explore a plethora of current event topics. Additionally, the read-aloud books will complement our non-fiction texts, with relatable characters and stories that inspire.

With all that is going on in the world today, I would like to create a classroom library with resources about current events. With magazines, they can have the option to grab these kid-friendly magazines to use at home, share with their family, and use in the classroom both digitally and in print. I hope to provide the resources they require to help foster a love of reading that will enable them to achieve academic success and progress academically and socially.
