Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Each year, I have my 1st grade students paint a monthly themed picture to hang in the classroom. Since the focus on teaching the standards is always the priority, that leaves little time for art in the classroom. However, this is something that students still need. Some students may not be good at Math or Reading, but they excel at painting. Their fine motor skills are outstanding. I give them a small template with a circle and a rectangle and a paintbrush, and they make "magic." Through our paintings, we celebrate the seasons and the holidays and even incorporate Science or History by painting apples baskets in September and portraits of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington in February. I always hang their artwork in my classroom, and I change it every month. This allows students to feel proud of themselves and it makes our classroom their classroom.
