This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been teaching for sixteen years, and yet still feel as fresh and hopeful about my work as the day I began. At scant moments when my resolve falters, within seconds a flood of images, sounds, and smiles spills forth to remind me of just how privileged I am to do this work.

This work--at moments both big and small--is all about the kids.

As such, as I move about in the world, I am always thinking of the work and the kids--they are so curious, and so ready to demystify what can seem oblique and impenetrable. In our classroom, moving from abstract ideas to concrete models and solutions is an extremely satisfying (albeit it seemingly endless) pursuit, and my co-teacher and I strive to make content and concepts as dynamic and real-world friendly as possible. This is rich and layered work, and the kids respond in kind. We love what we do, and the only real downside is there is never enough time in the short, short year to get it all in.

My Project

While I am absolutely against passive screen time in schools, for the past few years, our class has enjoyed access to technology, and been all the better for it. With nearly 1:1 computer access, we have been able to visit faraway lands, compete in coding exercises, send e-mails, improve our recall of basic math facts, and much, much more. However, the time to upgrade our storage system has come. I wish I had the chance to include a picture in this proposal so you could see for your own eyes how we've created a schedule to charge our 23 laptops in a safe meant for 12. Very creative? Check! Exhausting and prone to fail when someone neglects to rotate the devices? Check. Time for an upgrade? Definitely. (Also: I am asking for one more Chromebook to bring our total number of devices to 24.) Thank you!
