Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager to learn, curious and a joy to teach. They are deserving of the best possible education and that is what I strive to provide for them. My school, located in East Palo Alto, serves Latino, Polynesian and African-American students.

Nearly all of my students come from low income households where the resources are often limited and families are stretched thin.

A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless. I am trying to teach them how to use technology and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science and social studies. I am committed to offer them the best possible education.

My Project

I am excited for my students to receive their own board games and card games to play with their families at home. My second graders are doing full distance learning and will likely be doing this for most of the school year. I have selected a set of classic card games for each student which includes games such as Old Maid, Go Fish, Memory and Crazy Eights. In addition, each child will get to choose one other game. The options I have selected are Guess Who, Sorry, Trouble, Connect 4, Uno and Skipbo. I am also selecting a few other games for the classroom which will be used once the students do return to the classroom. These include words games and games to build math skills.

Playing board games and card games at home will be interactive, educational and fun and will build connection with family members.

It will provide a much needed break from being on a screen. It will also teach math and literacy skills such as counting, adding and subtracting, sequencing, matching attributes, word building, and more. Lastly, playing games will teach many life skills and social skills like taking turns, negotiating, memorization, organization and patience.
