Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Words are important. Especially new ones. For this project, I am asking for help to give my students a classroom set of dictionaries in order to gain word knowledge that will support their literacy development.
As developing readers, I want to improve my students’ literacy and comprehension by using tools that will assist them in expanding their vocabulary.
In most instances, their vocabulary is learned indirectly. However, and particularly in an academic setting, some vocabulary must be taught directly.
During history lectures, read aloud sessions or class discussions, I love it when my students say, “what does that word mean?” My response has become routine in my classes: I reach for the ONE dictionary I have in my classroom, hand it to the student who asked for the meaning of the word, and ask them to find it. My action is customarily met with a groan, mostly because I didn’t give them the answer, but also because by handing them the dictionary, I am asking them to find the word, find the definition and read it aloud.
I have found that through this type of engagement my students are developing some research skills and expanding their vocabulary. And though it is often met with a reactionary response, I have found that my students actually find the activity insightful, informative, and somewhat fun.
As their history teacher, I want my students to be able to read historical texts and documents - to tackle, analyze, and decipher words and texts. The class set of dictionaries will allow me to support their literacy development. As my students learn to read more advanced texts, particularly content-based historical text, I want them to be able improve their fluency and comprehension by boosting their vocabulary.
