My Project

I have amazing, creative, and hard-working fourth graders. More than half of my students come from lower socioeconomic homes. Many are ESL learners, and many more qualify for special education. I have the best students and want to give them the best! Due to the daily obstacles they face, some find education very challenging. Many come to school without their basic needs being met, making it hard to focus on math, science, or reading. I try to think outside the box to keep my kids engaged and excited to learn.

Reading should be taught holistically.

Students are visual learners and need to "see" the new knowledge they read about to make sense of it. This is especially true for my language learners and students who lack exposure to different experiences. Our classroom has a new reading curriculum, and I want to transform our room so that students feel like they are experiencing what they are reading. The exciting learning props will support the following units: Eureka! Student Inventor, American Revolution, and Treasure Island. By having the classroom decorated in the era that we are learning about and some extra fun props, such as lab coats and pirate hats, students will be engaged and excited to learn to read.
