My Students

My students need instruments that they don't need to worry about breaking! Boomwhackers are the answer. They are instruments that are easy to learn, hard to break and a ton of fun to play!

Our school, located in the heart of Philadelphia, serves students from across the city with a variety of needs.

This year, our school has had some very special students join our community. In addition to having a full K-8 Autistic Support, we have welcomed a wonderful self-contained Special Education classroom with grades ranging from 2nd to 4th. Many of the students stay in the classroom the entire day because busy spaces with lots of people are overwhelming. Often times, they're quickly frazzled and frustrated while they work. These students have been diagnosed with a multitude of acronym based maladies, with the greatest diagnoses being ADHD. With their variety of needs, they ALL specifically need help in getting and remaining organized... playing MUSIC could be the key to their success!

My Project

Boomwhackers offer these students a chance to not only be quickly successful, but worry free. They are almost impossible to break and incredibly fun to play! Playing an instrument in a group can not only help these students learn to be organized and responsible for their part, but can teach them how to work with a group of other people! Boomwhackers are plastic tubes tuned to different pitches of the musical alphabet. Using boomwhackers, the students are able to create a musical scale where they can create and perform written music. Boomwhackers are easy to play, too!! Students can use the mallets or simply bang them together! If students know their colors, they can play boomwhackers, reading a music score before they are even reading books. Playing an instrument of any kind will help build music literacy skills while reinforcing language and literacy development. (SHHHH!!! Don't tell the kids!! No one said that school was supposed to be fun!)

These students are very special, talented, and most importantly, eager and ready to learn.

Music seems to be an area where each of these students has the potential to excel. When reading and math are difficult to wrap your head around, music can offer an outlet for expression and relaxation. These instruments are the key to their success.
