My Students

My school is located in a high-need community in New York City. All of the students are diagnosed as autistic. The children in the class are low functioning than the peers. Most of them are limited in their speech and language skills. In addition, their frustration tolerance is low and they require structured learning environment. When the students get anxious and/or frustrated, they often exhibit diificulties in following directions and behave aggressive behaviors such as biting, banging on the table, scratching, hitting, pushing, etc., to get out their feelings.

My Project

Since March 23, 2020, New York City schools are closed and all the instructions are turning to the remote learning as a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic. Our students with autism are so vulnerable as a result of lacking the hands-on, manipulative and interactive in their learnings. As their teacher, I have been researching all possible teaching methodologies to enhance the students’ learning abilities.

Finally, I found some digital BOOM Learning resources.

Boom cards are digital task cards that make learning fun. With the BOOM cards, the students are able to play and engage in their reading, writing and math lessons. For example, my high functioning students are able to learn the sight words, sentences and the money lessons. My low functioning students are able to learn alphabet letters, numbers & etc. However, the free BOOM cards resources are very limited. The students become bored easily for the same games after some times. Therefore, buying Boom cards using the TPT gift cards will enhance students' learning experience.

In addition, TPT gift cards also helps the class to buy some file folder games for the students. File folder activities are fun and engaging. It can teach the same skills repeatedly with different theme. The file folder games can be used to help the students who are strong in their visual-perceptual skills to practice the skills that involves sorting or matching that they are good and enjoy. File folder activities also are good for practicing skills independently.

In September 2020, New York City schools will use a combination of in-person and remote learning. BOOM Learning Cards and folder file games will be excellent for our students to learn.
