My Students

I am a New York City public school educator. I am a part of a district that is a cohort of many schools across our city and has the highest amount of special needs students. Our district is specifically designed to educate students with disabilities. My students have autism and/or multiple disabilities. They are also economically disadvantaged.

Our district works a 12-month program, so it is essential to have appropriate educational materials and curriculum to support them and meet their individualized learning needs.

I teach students with disabilities, and 100% of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Students often come to us with many struggles from home. I want their education to be fun and exciting. Many of our students are medically fragile and cannot attend school in person. Full remote learning is their only option, which can be difficult due to their disabilities.

My students are some of the most disadvantaged students in New York. I want to ensure that we can meet their needs and encourage their learning. My students deserve an education just like students who can attend school in person during this pandemic!

My Project

Students with disabilities often have a hard time connecting over a computer. Many of our students follow a routine, which has really changed this year due to the pandemic. Forty percent of our students are fully remote while our school has blended learning for the other 60%; they attend one week in person and one week remote. Most of our students' education comes from virtual, live, synchronous instruction. Our students often need hands-on support and manipulatives in order to complete work. Boom Learning will provide the ability for teachers to create easy-to-complete assignments. Our teachers need a way to provide engaging, multi-sensory experiences in order to support students' IEP goals, as well as support students in learning curriculum-based content. Many students struggle with the use of multiple websites and log-ins for remote learning. Boom Learning gives our staff the ability to create engaging lessons that all students can access. By giving our school a Boom Learning account, all our educators can use one platform that meets the needs of the majority of our students. Access to this account will allow our staff to get the necessary digital resources to support all students. It will also provide access and accessibility to meaningful learning experiences that would be harder to manage without it. Boom Learning allows students to create lessons that will specifically target IEP goals and focus instruction based on individualized needs. All of our teachers and students are struggling because so many companies that had free resources last year have now moved back to a paid subscription but we are still in the midst of a pandemic and greatly need these resources. This project is supporting myself and the entire school community. Thank you for all of your help!
