Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

History is interesting. Reading nothing but history textbooks, however, is not. I want to help my students develop a passion for history by providing them with a diverse selection of titles through with to explore the present and examine the past.

I teach in an urban alternative public high school in Utah.

We serve at-risk youth. Most of our students qualify for free lunch. We are incredibly diverse. Over 80 languages are spoken in our building. I work with 9th-12th graders. Many of my students are teen moms. I am a second year teacher. I have already purchased many materials for my classroom, but these materials are not enough. These students deserve more.

My Project

"Maus" is a beautifully drawn and historically accurate comic book. It recounts the horrors of the Holocaust as told by the author's father. Students connect to this story in a way many cannot connect to "traditional" text. Through reading Maus, students gain perspective on the Human Rights violations that occurred in WWII and have a jumping off-point for understand the importance of Human Rights law. My students will begin to identify with history and understand their own rights within the global context.
